Tehwavur Rana reached India
The National Investigation Agency (NIA) on Thursday evening arrested Tahwwur Hussain Rana, who is the main conspirator of the 26/11 Mumbai terror attack, at Indira Gandhi International Airport in Delhi (IGIA). The arrest was made by Rana successfully after extradition from the United States.
Rana lived in Chicago
The NIA had secured Rana’s extradition after years of continuous and concrete efforts and his last attempts to stop extradition from the US also failed. Tahwwur Rana was brought from American’s Los Angeles to Delhi by a special aircraft, including the National Security Guard (NSG) and NIA teams, including senior officials. As soon as he got out of the aircraft, the NIA investigation team arrested him after completing all legal formalities. Rana is a Canadian citizen, who is of Pakistani origin and he lived primarily in Chicago (America).
Rana’s legal appeals failed
Along with the coordinated efforts of India’s Ministry of External Affairs and Ministry of Home Affairs, NIA successfully completed this extradition process. Rana was placed in American judicial custody, where NIA initiated its proceedings under the Indo-US extradition treaty. Many of his legal appeals and efforts against Rana’s extradition petition failed, including an emergency petition made in the US Supreme Court.
Main conspirator of Mumbai attack
Rana is alleged that he along with David Coleman Headley (Dawood Gilani), terrorist organizations Lashkar-e-Taiba (Let) and Hizbul Mujahideen (HUJI) had conspired for the horrific terrorist attack in Mumbai in 2008, in which 166 people were killed and more than 238 were injured.
The Government of India has declared Lashkar-e-Taiba and Hizbul Mujahideen as a ‘terrorist organization’, which is banned under Indian law under the Act, 1967.
